Description
This book is a tribute to the artist’s return to his birthplace, to the place of his childhood, once filled with happiness; to the streets of his tenuous survival during World War II; and to the memorial for his grandparents and father. Bak’s journey was marked by memories and profound sadness and a great awareness of his responsibility to express the spirits of all who were destroyed during the Holocaust. Scholar Lawrence L. Langer provides commentary on the rich symbolic significance and uniqueness of the artist’s work.

Author
Samuel Bak has had solo exhibitions at private galleries in New York, Boston, London, Paris, Berlin, Munich, Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, Zurich, and Rome. Publications of his work include eleven books, most notably Between Worlds, and his memoir, Painted in Words. He has also been the subject of two documentary films. He lives in Weston, MA, with his wife, Josée.

Lawrence L. Langer is professor emeritus of English at Simmons College. His books include The Holocaust and the Literary Imagination, Holocaust Testimonies and The Ruins of Memory, and Art from the Ashes: A Holocaust Anthology. He and his wife live in West Newton, Ma.
