Modern Intellectual and Political History of the Middle East
|
| |
Syracuse University Press’s interdisciplinary series is dedicated to the
dissemination of theoretically informed works dealing with the praxis of
intellectual and sociopolitical change in the region since the eighteenth
century. The overall aim of this series is to move beyond the prevalent
pseudo-dialogue between Western and Middle Eastern intellectuals. We believe
that it is still possible to move the terms of debate toward a more critical
understanding of one another’s positions. A sustained effort will be made to
present the history and vicissitudes of the Middle East from local
perspectives. To this end, we wish to encourage the translation and
publication of works of modern critical thought written in
the languages of the Middle East. The series will also consider
critical manuscripts by Middle Eastern and Western intellectuals that fall
within the following broadly defined topics relevant
to the Middle East:
- Orientalism and Occidentalism
- The Historiography of Middle Eastern Encounters with Western Modernity
- The Legacy of Colonialism, Imperialism, and Globalization
- State Formation, Civil Discord, and Foreign Policy
- The Genesis of Social Movements and Political Parties
- The Politics of National Identity and Cultural Transition
- Modern Islamic Philosophical and Political Discourse
- Literary Figures and Genres
- Biographies or Memoirs of Intellectuals, Scholars, Politicians, and Activists
The Modern Intellectual and Political History of the Middle East series
includes scholarly books, books of great public interest, translations,
texts, and reprints of classic works.
