On the Edge of Scarcity
Environment, Resources, Population, Sustainability, and Conflict

Edited by Michael N. Dobkowski and Isidor Wallimann
With a Foreword by John K. Roth

Paper $19.95s    |   0-8156-2943-5    |   2001

These essays address one of the most pressing and significant issues that humanity has confronted to date—the lack of life-sustaining resources.

Drawn from the much acclaimed COMING AGE OF SCARCITY and adapted here for general classroom use, this work will be an ideal introduction to courses in population, environment and resources, social conflict, and genocide studies. As we have entered the twenty-first century, several components converge, namely population growth, limited land for cultivation, limited energy and other resources, and environmental carrying capacity. Michael N. Dobkowski and Isidor Wallimann establish a realistic projection of the future that awaits humankind and point to possible ways to deal with potentially disastrous bottlenecks and conflicts. Scholars from a variety of disciplines investigate the problems and suttest ways to maximize individual and collective well being and survival.

ON THE EDGE OF SCARCITY was translated into German under the title DAS ZEITALTER DER KNAPPHEIT.
